Motorcycle Safety Tips

If you ride a motorcycle, you know it is one of the most adventurous and exhilarating experiences around. But, then you must also know that it can be very dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. Keep in mind that motorcycle accidents are thirty times more likely to end in fatalities to the rider and many are caused by cyclists themselves.

Here at Jack Carter Powersports North, we had our experts gather some motorcycle safety tips to help you stay on the road and keep safe. Keep reading to find out more about these tips, then visit us in Calgary, AB, where we also serve customers in Red Deer, AB.

Know the Rules of the Road

Riding a motorcycle requires skill and keen judgment and a safety course can help you practice these. Some advanced courses can even teach you about collision avoidance maneuvers, advanced turning, control tips, and braking techniques. Apart from safety courses teaching you appropriate actions to take in unpredictable riding situations, you need to follow basic traffic rules, use signals, and go the approved speed limit to avoid accidents.

Avoiding Crashes

Never assume other motorists can see you. Keep scanning your horizon, checking each driveway, entrance, intersection, and exit. It’s important to note that as a cyclist you have no protection from the elements or other motorists.

Weather

Rain, ice, and snow can be especially hazardous to people on motorcycles because they have less traction than a car. It’s best to choose another day to ride if inclement weather is forecast.

Motorcycle Gear

Use motorcycle gear to protect yourself from the elements, debris, and road rash. Appropriate gear includes:

  • Helmet.
  • Goggles.
  • Leather jacket.
  • Leather pants or chaps.
  • Over-the-ankle boots.
  • Non-slip gloves.

It is highly recommended to dress in layers and adjust to any changing weather throughout the day.

Inspect Motorcycle

Doing daily inspections on your motorcycle is recommended, especially if you use it daily. Check your headlights, taillights, brakes, handlebars, fuel, oil, tire pressure, turn signals, mirrors, and horn.

Miscellaneous

Avoid other drivers’ blind spots. Wear reflective or bright clothing. Always use your turn signals and hand signals. Be on the lookout for road hazards such as potholes, bumps, sand, oil, or loose gravel. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, remember tailgating is unwise. Keep a small first aid kit holding things like disinfecting wipes, bandages, hand sanitizer, gauze, adhesive tape, and band-aids.
